On Wed. (June 2nd) Dun Rite construction started stripping the old runway. They were to grind up the existing surface to be used as a base for the new asphalt. The grinding machine used water to mix in with the ground up asphalt. On about the 2nd pass they drove a water truck onto the runway and it broke through the surface across from the center flying station right on the white center line. Later in the day they got the grinder machine stuck twice. The ground under the runway was very damp and soft. Although the area around the runway was dried and hard as concrete the under the runway was not. The soil test rods were easily pushed in 4ft deep. The grinding was stopped at about 95% complete and a soil stabilization company was called in to give an estimate on recovery from this situation. We left the field on that day thinking that we had just lost the model club. Many phone calls between board members were made on Thursday. The final decision was to proceed. This meant that another $7,000.00 was going to be required for the job. On Friday (June 4) they brought in two double loads of lime and spread it over the field. A huge piece of equipment was used to blend it in to a depth of 18 inches. Rolling, watering and many hours of grading brought the field to the condition as seen by those at the club meeting on Saturday. On Monday (June 7) the paving crew arrived and proceeded with the black topping operation. By the end of the day it was all down, rolled smooth and the edges were back filled. On Tuesday (June 8) the striping crew put down the center line, an X at each end and the ramp safety lines. This completed the repaving project that cost us $34,448. On Wed (June 9) an electric powered A/C took off the new surface at 7:15AM, making 3 touch and goes. Later all three flying stations were checked out and declared suitable for use by more technically superior IC powered A/C. |
